Information:
The FFHC started its active operations in the country back
in 1969 and was launched by the UN's FAO.
It is an agricultural,
registered NGO in Banjul which is focused on a number of areas
related to farm food production and related structures. These
include the building of small bridges, ditches, water crossing
points, grain stores etc.
They also promote the use of rice milling machines and environmental
preservation. These measures are aimed at increasing the quantity
of farm grown swamp cultivated rice
in The Gambia and targeted at village self-sufficiency of
this staple cereal grain.
The Freedom From Hunger Campaign is active in the Gambia's
Central River Region, Western Region, North & South Bank,
Lower and Upper River Regions.
Between 2011 and 2012 it was granted US$ 30,000.00 by the
GEF Small Grants Programme to work on the "Expansion
and consolidation of community forests in the Lower River
Region". This funding was co-financed to the tune of
US$ 24,132.00 by the FFHC.
The aim of the project is to preserve biodiversity through
the consolidation and introduction of community forest management
in twenty areas in the Kiang and Jarra Districts. It focused
on villages that are within areas deemed to be prospective
community forest regions which is estimated to have benefited
2,500 men and farmers.
