Information:
 The
Gambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (GICA) was founded
by the Financial Reporting Act 2013 which repealed the Accountants
Act of 1991 thereby replacing the Gambia Association of Accountants
(GAA). The 2013 legislation supported by the World Bank through
the Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes (ROSC)
is a significant development in the development of the accountancy
profession in the country.
Members of the Gambia Institute of Chartered Accountants are
required to achieve particular minimum qualifications with
the recognised professional accountancy bodies such as ICAEW,
ACCA, alongside relevant audit experiences at the level of
an audit senior before an audit practicing certificate can
be issued by the Council body.
It is a legal requirement that all firms aiming to provide
auditing and accounting services in The Gambia apply for registration
to the institute as a member firm. Some of the registered
firms with the GICA are Augustus Prom, PKF, Foresight Chartered
Accountants and Management Consultants, DT Associates, Payce
Consulting, HAD & Co. and Accord Associates. These are
firms that are licensed by GICA to carry out audit assignments
in the The Gambia. There may be a number of firms operating
inside the country that are not registered with GICA. Performing
accounting and auditing engagements in The Gambia without
registration is unlawful.
One of the advantages of becoming an accounting institute
is the provision of the GICA's own locally offered professional
accountancy examination or as part of a regional body. Based
on the institue's membership of the Association of Accountancy
Bodies of West Africa (ABWA), the institute had introduced
the Accounting Technician Scheme of West Africa (ATSWA) in
2018 which is the equivalent of CAT and AAT and. The aim of
the ATSWA is to ensure harmonisation of the accountancy qualification
in West Africa at the level of the technician which allows
for greater movement of workforce in the region. Graduates
from the ATSWA can go on to the professional stage of the
Examination similar to IGAC and ICAN of Ghana and Nigeria
both of which are recognised by ICAEW and ACCA.
