Information:
The Gambia Red Cross was established in Banjul during Colonial
times in 1948 as a branch of the British Red Cross and became
an autonomous national society in 1966. They are a non-governmental
organisation that is primarily engaged in humanitarian relief
work who are composed of members and volunteers.
Such activities includes delivering first aid to disaster
victims, health programmes
immunizations and HIV/Aids, water & sanitation,
information dissemination, providing vital food
and medicines, shelter,
disaster management and response, assisting refugees,
finding missing family members etc.
The GRCS is also the major partner of the Government in all
emergency relief
operations being part of the taskforce of the National Disaster
Management Agency (NDMA). Their work is often coordinated
with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red
Crescent Societies (IFRC) having been recognized by the two
bodies in 1975 and 1974 respectively.
There are 7 branches of GRCS in each of The Gambia's seven
administrative regions which allows it to more rapidly respond
to various local crises and other relief issues. It is also
able to draw financing from DREF which is a source of un-earmarked
money to ensure rapid
financial support is available for disaster response operations.
