Information:
Africa
Startup Gambia is a Norwegian headquartered charitable foundation
whose main goal is to develop and enhance occupations in The
Gambia through private enterprise, use of better agricultural
techniques and environmental
conservation.
The organisation welcomes volunteers
and charity donations
to help run the institution.
On the founding of Africa Startup charity in 2008, the emphasis was on
infrastructure programs and starting new businesses and pushing for
an enterprising culture. As time went by it was soon noticed
that the main cause of difficulties was in large part due to a
deficiency of basic education and to bring in new ways of problem solving.
Because of these factors, the emphasis has shifted to creating
two major programs, MyProduce and MyFarm.
This
almost 2.5 acre charity farm in Sukuta is a live-in education
center for agriculturalists, children and young people, offering
stimulating, customised learning courses from seed planting
to business knowledge, recognising the significance of self-sufficient
food security
in an increasingly changeable international scene.
Products & Services: •
Agricultural practice • Sales shop for local Gambian products •
Soap production • Small business enterprise training
• Open day visits
• School holiday trips & day programs
• Learning through play
Activities:
'Learning through play' is designed for young children from the
nearby community. Here they use books, play tools, Lego, Duplo, iPads etc. to
advance basic math and language skills.
'Learning through action' is intended for Grade 6 and over
summer camps and school groups in line with the agricultural
science curriculum of The Gambia whilst introducing novel,
sustainable technologies including solar dryers & ovens,
parabolic cookers etc.
Finally, there are extensive training courses at MyFarm Foundation
targeted at young farmers and people who have left school,
integrating environmental awareness and agricultural training
with the necessary enterprising skills required to add value
to produce and sell them at a profit.
