Information:
The affiliated Gambian chapter of Rotary Club International
(RCI) was founded in Banjul on the 7th of August 1979 with
24 members after receiving its formal charter. The club has
in fact been in existence since 1974.
It is a fundraising charitable organisation and registered
NGO which focuses on community–based development projects.
It also operates an education
scholarship program giving 20 scholarships per year to
needy and meritorious school students who otherwise might
miss out on completing their high school education. The funds
for this scheme are raised yearly via the annual sponsored
walk.
In collaboration with its partners the Rotary Club regularly
participates in Polio-Plus, its Polio immunization campaign.
The club has also engaged in the medical field by supplying
the Bansang Hospital
with medical equipment such as an auto clave sterilizing unit
and Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital with various medical
equipment and pharmaceutical drugs. RC has also provided
a 15 passenger minibus to the charity named The Gambia Organisation
of the Visually Impaired (GOVI)
and has donated an ambulance to Sulayman
Junkung Hospital in Bwiam in 2011 with the collaboration
of the Rotary Clubs of Gravenhage Kijkduin in the Netherlands
and the Gambian Future Fund.
One of the Banjul Rotarians' biggest achievements, in partnership
with the charity Water Aid, has been the construction of just
over 90 concrete lined water wells with hand pumps dotted
around villages and towns in The Gambia.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Rotary in 2005, all
clubs were asked by Rotary International to undertake a major
project in their country or area. In response to this challenge
the Rotary Club of Banjul decided to build and fully equip
a laboratories complex for the teaching of science and technology.
The building facilities includes biology, computer, chemistry,
physics and agricultural science labs. Their partners
were the Trust Bank, Africell and Total Gambia Limited.
The Secondary School Science Laboratories Project was conceived
with the primary aim of providing a hands-on environment for
the garnering of scientific knowledge by secondary school
students.
