Information:
The
Gambia National Olympic Committee was formed in 1998 with
its origins going back to 1972 under the then government Directorate
of Youth and Sports. It was registered as a full member
of the International Committee in 1976.
The management structure of the NOC is made up of a two-tier governing
council called the Executive Bureau and the General Assembly.
Currently the GNOC has 21 affiliated sports associations.
The body is engaged in making sporting related courses available for
coaches, providing a forum for workshops, sports administration
attending international conferences and seminars, monitoring and
encouraging the participation of women in sport.
In 1996 the organisation developed an idea called SIPP or
the Sports Infrastructure Initiative. This was to aid the
governments in its desire to decentralise sports to the various
regions of the Gambia. The ideas is to have a small stadium
in every one of the six administrative regions and to set
up in each a facilities complex where promising sportsmen
and women can train. The first two to open their centres were
Serrekunda East and Farafenni in 2007.
