Information:
The
Methodist Mission Agricultural Programme was founded
in Banjul in 1974 by the Methodist Church of The Gambia
as a farming based NGO which promotes revenue generation
activities, environmental protection and food security
development in rural communities. The development charity's
main goal is ultimately to improve the livelihoods and
standards of living for rural communities.
MMAP's main aims are met through various measures such
as the use of effective crop irrigation methods, water
tube well digging, treadle pumps, tree planting, food
preservation, growing seedlings, running courses for
farmers, promoting woodlots etc.
The Methodist missionaries have been operating in The
Gambia since 1821 and first became involved in the field
of horticulture in 1823 when it procured five dozen
hoes and various farming equipment for projects on Janjanbureh
also known as Lemain Island (formerly McCarthy Island).
