Information: The
organisation GETS originated in the UK and is a fully
registered education charity (No. 343/2011) in Gambia
supporting teachers and students. (Donation & fundraising
details are on their site.)
Background:
After a holiday back in 1997 Mr. Francis Glynn and his
family founded the Gambia Tourist Support Organisation
(GTS). Its goals were to create training and job opportunities
for local people. In
due course GTS managed to construct a fully functional
school. As the years passed by it became clear that
another charity was required to collect, administer
and manage funds for the school and for any possible
further education projects by creating a membership
support base. This aim was realised back in 2004 when
the Gambia Education and Teaching Support (GETS) was
registered as a charity in the United Kingdom (No. 1110998).
Since 2004 the education charity has assisted over 600
students with sponsorships, managed projects for other
charities, assumed the administration of an Education
Centre and operated an English speaking nursery school
in Bakoteh Estate (since merged with the Sunrise
Centre).
