Background Information:
The United Nations Population Fund's assistance in The
Gambia began in 1972 with support to the 19973 Population
Census, the provision of contraceptives supplies, vehicles
and equipment, the strengthening of Maternal and Child
health / Family Planning (MCHFP) services & communication
activities.
Since then, better registration and reporting systems
have been developed to improve data collection and the
information base for demographic analysis.
The Fund also helped the Government to recognise and
improve health care services in rural areas by strengthening
seven major Health Centres in the five administrative
divisions of the country as focus for health development.
Training of staff at the central level to improve technical
and managerial skills has been given priority through
fellowships in management training and contraceptive
technology. |
