Dancehall
Masters formed in November 1998 as a hip-hop
band with the aim of educating Gambia's youth about
the important issues of the day. The members of the
band are Brother Coms (Lamin Fatty), Daddy Sam (Mame
Balla Diouf) originally from Dakar. They were later
joined by the dancer Mister P. Brother Coms was born
in Serrekunda in 1978 and really got into reggae music
just before leaving
school
in 1998. It was in the same year that he met his singing
partner Daddy Sam which led to the creation of Dancehall
Masters.
At the 1999 Gambian Rap Awards, Dancehall Master won
the category award for 'Best New Group'. In October
of the same year they released 'Brother Man' which urged
the youth of The Gambia not to live in frustration and
despair about their plight. In 2002 they won the ‘prix
de l’intégration’ at the hip-hop awards in Dakar.
In 2003 they signed a recording and marketing contract
with the Dakar based record label Metropol-2 Records.
Their publicist is Aime Boissy. "The excellence
of Dancehall Masters' style was easily vivid to Senegalese
music fans," Boissy said. "The boys were quickly
initiated into the hall of the fans idols."
In 2003, Mame Bala signed a 5 year contract with Buba
Ndour; producer, and brother of Youssou Ndour, and moving
back to Senegal in 2004. He appeared as a guest artist
on Viviane Ndour's 2004 international album ‘Esprit,
Viviane et frères’. His first Album was titled Senegambia
and the song Vacance Yi’ became a big hit in Gambia
and Senegal.
