The mains voltage in Gambia is 220-240
Volts AC (frequency 50 Hz G ).
Travel Adapters:
In hotels
in Gambia you will often find variable electrical sockets
such as type "C" or type "F".
If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of
these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in
order to plug in. They do not convert electricity. They
simply allow a dual-voltage appliance, a transformer
or a converter from one country to be plugged into the
wall outlet of another country. Travel plug adapters
simply change the shape of your appliance's plug to
match whatever type of socket you need to plug into.
Socket Types:
 Electrical
sockets (outlets) in The Gambia are mostly the
type "G" British BS-1363, which accept the
3 pin rectangular blade plug which is composed of 2
parallel flat pins with ground pin. The next most common
type is the European-style 2 pin.
If your laptop, digital camera and camcorder chargers,
or other equipment is multi-voltage it can be plugged
into most outlets in the country with just a wall outlet
plug adapter, grounded (3 pin) or ungrounded (2 pin).
Stabilisers / Surge Protection:
The reliability of the electricity supply is relatively
steady & stable in your hotel though the efficiency
of air conditioners may be affected due to occasional
fluctuations at periods of high demand. However, you
should be warned that outside your accommodation domestic
appliances, such as DVDs and laptop computers, may be
put as risk of damage if no power stabilizer / regulator
is used. This particular device which uses a continuously
variable autotransformer to maintain an AC output that
is as close to the standard local voltage (or expected/desired
voltage) as possible, where the actual voltage supplied
by the electrical infrastructure is unstable. You should
also consider using a surge protector.
 If
you are going to make a journey further inland, take
into account that there might be no electricity system
at all in many rural areas. |
