Masquerades
play a very important and pivotal role in Gambian society.
They include the Kankurang, of the Mandinka, the Kumpo
of the Jola, the Simba of the Wolof tribe and the Mamapara.

Each masquerade is associated with either circumcision,
enforcing village rules, scaring away evil from the
village as well as today's general entertainment.
