Information:
 The
Darwin Initiative Project, The Gambia, is a programme
sponsored by the UK Government (DEFRA) with funds being secured
by Warwick University who also work with the Makasutu
Wildlife Trust - who are the country based implementers
and operate the Field Station For Biodiversity & Research.
The Darwin Initiative aims to conserve the Earth's biodiversity
by helping those nations that have wide biodiversity, but
lack the financial capacity to adequately protect their living
natural resources. It also assists countries to achieve their
commitments as agreed in various treaties such as Convention
on Biological Diversity (CBD), CMS and CITES.
 The
Gambia project is the first Darwin Initiative to be financed
in the West African sub-region and is about enabling more
of the local people here to understand the aims of the programme
and appreciate why it is important in their lives.
The centre offers training courses for a variety of people
covering different aspects of natural resource management
and biodiversity.
The research project has also allowed the Makasutu
Wildlife Trust to create a pictorial database, talk on radio
and TV programmes, provide a national symposium about biodiversity
in the second year of the project and publish staff training
manuals and a series of booklets.
 These
field guides contain information about reptiles, mammals,
common butterflies and amphibians of The Gambia. These have
been distributed free to lower basic schools in conjunction
with the Ministry of Education.
