Types of Accommodation:
The Gambia's Western Region resort areas have many available listings
of holiday rentals such as bungalows, condos, villas and
rooms sleeping single travellers and couples up to families of
8 people.
Most lets are self-catering houses and flats with their own kitchens
however, some property owners will offer a chef who can prepare
your meals on an agreed basis. Some listings are shared &
private luxury lodgings with a swimming pool in the garden area
as well as vehicle parking.
Facilities & Services:
Many of the listed self-catering holiday rentals in Gambia will
provide a daily room cleaning service and optional laundry for
a small extra payment. Most lodgings come fully furnished with
a kitchen or kitchenette equipped with a fridge / freezer, gas
cooker, crockery, pots & pans, cutlery and sometimes a microwave
oven and washing machine.
Other services may include excursions, car hire with driver, a
cook and watchman on site as well as facilities such as a backup
generator and reserve water tank.
Some bathrooms will in fact be just a shower, wash hand basin
and toilet. If you require a bathtub then make that clear to the
owners before booking your holiday home. Usually master bedrooms
will come with an en-suite bathroom so do enquire before making
any reservations.
Note that rooms with air-conditioners usually pay more either
as a fixed charge extra or via a special metering unit you top
up.
Best Locations:
The most popular locations are as near to the beach in Kololi,
Senegambia and Kotu with the next most sought after areas for
accommodations being in Bijilo,
Cape Point, Brufut
and Fajara
which are all in the Greater Banjul area. Most of the vacation
lets are in quiet residential locations close to amenities such
as restaurants, bars, supermarkets etc. The places that are off-the-beaten
track are in Gunjur
(south west coastal) and Sukuta
(urban, inland).
Bedrooms:
These can vary greatly in quality and quantity in Gambia from
1, 2, 3 and even 4 to 5 bedroom bungalows & luxury villas
to a single bedroom suite. Some are fitted with top quality furnishings
while some are very basic.
Room Rates:
In Gambia these are usually charged on a weekly basis though some
owners charge on both a daily and weekly basis.
Most holiday apartments and houses are geared towards holidaymakers
visiting for short-term stays however, long-term stays are usually
welcome and are usually negotiable. Costs are normally higher
during the tourist season and lowest during the rainy summer months.
Payable currencies can vary depending on conditions such as the
Dalasi, Euro, Dollar or UK pound sterling.
Availability:
If you intend to visit during the peak winter season then it's
important to make your bookings early as demand is high.
Banjul Airport Transfers:
Some proprietors will have a free Banjul airport pick-up and drop-off
service while others may make a pre-arranged charge.
