Review:
Guesthouse Kairoh Garden Kuntaur is next to the Gambia
River in Kuntaur near Janjanbureh (McCarthy Island,
Georgetown) and is a branch of Kairoh Garden in Tanjeh
Village.
The simple lodgings consists of twelve rooms within
three buildings. Each of the accommodation units has
its own private terrace with seating for relaxing
day or night. By each bed is a simple bedside drawer
and pedestal fan to keep you cool, especially during
some warm and muggy nights.
You should be aware that the bathing facilities are
shared and are tucked away in the land. This is seen
as being more eco-friendly and hygienic than having
private bathrooms for all the guestrooms.
The restaurant is idyllically appointed right next
to the Gambia River in an open sided African hut style
structure with a grass roof. The views are simply
breathtaking where you can spot numerous bird species
and perhaps a crocodile or hippo! The food consists
of a daily changing menu of Continental and African
cuisine as well as beverages and snacks. Many of the
ingredients are from the local market and nearby organic
gardens.
Kairoh Garden offers tailor-made excursions to a number
of visitor attractions such as the Stone Circles at
Wassu or Baboon Island on the river. Among other sightseeing
activities are a donkey cart trip, Lumo market on
Mondays, birdwatching, rice field trekking, river
fishing, visit traditional villages, visit local nature
reserves like Kayabadi and Manjumba, visit a Gambian
family for the day, visit the 18th century slave house
on Janjanbureh. There are also special programs that
gives you insight and allows you to participate in
various aspects of traditional African life such as
health, education & agriculture.
