Review:
Madiyana Safari Lodge is one of the hidden treasures
of The Gambia which is on what is sometimes called
Paradise Island. It is an ideal retreat for anyone
looking for a peaceful eco-holiday with minimal impact
on the environment.
This area of Jinack Island is noted for its fantastic
stretch of virtually deserted beach, save for the
occasional passing herd of cattle. The beach and its
surrounding area is very tranquil and perfect for
anyone wanting to relax, swim, or get in touch with
nature. The beach is so quiet that you might sometimes
find you are the only hotel guest on the beach.
The lodge's grass huts are surprisingly cool due to
the almost constant sea breezes and high ceilings.
The staff keep them very clean and well maintained,
and you are protected from mozzies by over-hanging
mosquito nets over you bed. They also have a camping
facility available, even on the beach.
Madiyana's restaurant menu is however quite limited
as there are only two or three options, but fish is
almost always on the menu. The bar on the other hand
is kept fully stocked with a wide variety of soft
and alcoholic drinks. Try one of their wonderful cocktails
on the beach!
Your morning bath is a bucket and water affair in
the place of a normal shower. So is flushing your
toilet as there is no running water. Tip: if you want
to bath with warm water then leave your bucket out
in the sunshine for an hour or a bit longer.
Given Jinack's location, far from the grid, there
is no electricity on the island, but you will be given
a lantern to take around with you or to your guest
bedroom. Taking along a good torch with plenty of
batteries (or solar powered) is a must. You can charge
your mobile phones using their solar panels.
Upon your arrival at the airport you will be picked
up and taken to Banjul. From there you will be ferried
by boat to the island. |
