Review: (Ocean Bay Hotel and
Resort)
The present Ocean Bay Hotel and Resort was originally
called the Mariatou. It used to have a 'French city-centre'
frontage of plate glass and green awnings; entry and
exit gates to green-grilled forecourt parking of the
main street at Cape Point in Bakau. Today, it has
an immense, marble tiled reception lounge with its
booking desk on the right-hand side.
In widespread gardens behind the splendid beach
- neatly trimmed trellised bougainvillea, tamarisk
hedges, and coppices of palms - the immaculate amenities
first designed by Peter Mansk were also refurbished
in 1996-97: a top-notch entertainment and stage area
across from the main Hacienda Restaurant local and
visiting entertainers to The Gambia. Opposite is the
large rectangular pool, with the kids' splash pool
bulging out at one corner, and tennis court. From
the nearby bar cool beverages and light meals are
available throughout the day.
Following a complete refurbishment the Ocean Bay re-opened
in 2004 to much fanfair. The accommodation rooms are
arranged in two storey buildings spread over the gardens.
The Ocean Bay is is now an impressive addition addition
to the Gambia's expanding list of resort hotels. It
is spacious and visually appealing, with groomed,
palm shaded lawns and comfortable, though conservatively
decorated rooms.
Nearest to the main block, the apartments do not lack
class. French 'Afro-colonial' central stairs bifurcate
to upper balconies, and these shaped in upturned arches.
The interiors stylish and furnished in dark wood providing
a superb standard of comfort for all its guests. Fitted
with air-conditioning, television, security safe,
open porch, telephone, small fridge stocked with drinks,
dressing table, chairs, hairdryer, and large,
sturdy comfortable beds.
Just to the right of the hotel are a number of bars,
local restaurants, money exchange services, and a
small tourist craft market all within a stones-throw.
The popular spot of Kololi is just 15 minutes by taxi.
Note:
Aim to stay on the 1st floor suites as they tend to
be airier and with better sea views.
Board basis is bed and breakfast. |
