Review:
Located on 11th Street in Fajara the Safari Garden
Hotel lies on a sandy road in a quiet residential
district with generally good security. The beach
is only about 10 minutes by taxi.
It is the former home of an
Englishman
which over the years has been transformed into its
present condition by its former owner Geri and her
husband. The front thatched reception is fairly
informally laid out with postcards, belongings safe
and souvenirs for sale.
There is an outdoor bar and much of the activity
outside is focused around the pool which is 8 feet
deep at the deep end. The area is paved and bright
with draped awnings and parasols in in bright colours
as well as the compulsory deckchairs.
For activities outside the accommodation is close
to shops, bars & restaurants.
The establishment is one of those in Gambia committed
to responsible tourism & where possible applies
eco-tourist principles as it sources as much of
its restaurant produce from local source & attempts
to minimize harm to the environment by composting
its organic waste. The staff are given paid holidays
& furniture is locally made. Furthermore natural
mosquito repellents are used & no pesticides
or fertilisers are used in the garden area. The
hotel's former owners opened the Sandele
Eco-retreat in Kartong Village.
